In a residential public school, the House System has a special relevance. Not only is each house an autonomous unit under the care of a House Mistress and a Matron, it is a structured community within which girls develop great feelings of loyalty, of responsibility and of leadership. House Captains and all other Student Officials in Welham are girls who have poise, confidence and the ability to take initiative. Their views are encouraged and they are given considerable authority and responsibility. The School is divided into five Houses, which compete on the games and sports field and in a wide variety of other disciplines such as dance, music, debating, quizzing, dramatics, etc.

The Houses occupy large, airy buildings. Dormitories are divided among the five Houses so as to develop a sense of belonging and a team spirit. Each house is under the charge of a house mistress and a matron. New girls who join in Class V live in a separate hostel which gives the younger girls a feeling of closeness and confidence before they go into the higher classes. Junior and senior girls have separate hostels.
