Morocco trip left an indelible mark on us
By Ayurdhi, Chitrangada, Amiya, Anushka, and Yashodhara Tuesday, Jun 20, 2023
Five of us, Ayurdhi, Chitrangada, Amiya, Anushka, and Yashodhara, had an amazing chance to attend the Round Square international conference in Marrakesh, Morocco from 12th to 17th March 2023. With the theme of "The Future is Now," the conference brought together students and teachers from different countries, including Morocco, England, Romania, Germany, the US, Pakistan, and Dubai, for discussions on global issues.
Our journey began with a warm welcome from the host school, Elaraki International School, where we were greeted with a cultural offering of milk and dates. The Opening Ceremony, featuring a parade of school flags, highlighted the significance of the event and the global exposure we were about to experience. Keynote speeches centred around the six Round Square Ideals, emphasizing internationalism, democracy, environmentalism, adventure, service, and solidarity.
Outside of the conference, we had the opportunity to explore the vibrant Old Medina, immersing ourselves in Moroccan culture. From snake charmers to bustling souks selling aromatic spices and exquisite crafts, the Medina reminded us of the rich traditions we share with our Indian heritage.
Another highlight was our visit to the Elaraki Botanical Gardens, an eco-farm, where we learned about recycling practices, planting techniques, and Moroccan artistry projects. The day concluded with a delectable traditional lunch featuring cooked meat, vegetables, and multigrain buns, followed by a basket of fruits—a customary Moroccan touch.
On the third day, we journeyed to the Houz Region to support local schools and engage in community service projects. We repainted and refurbished village schools while interacting with underprivileged children. Witnessing the impact we made on their lives brought us a profound sense of fulfilment and joy. That evening, we participated in a cultural event that showcased Moroccan weddings and celebrated diverse cultures from around the world through unique performances by each school.
As the conference neared its end, we engaged in more Barazza discussions at Elaraki School before attending the Closing Ceremony. Later in the day, we ventured to the Agafay Desert for a camel ride and an invigorating hiking expedition to appreciate the breath-taking scenery. The memorable evening concluded with a flavoursome local dinner and an enchanting dance performance by a local tribe.
Overall, this conference left an indelible mark on all of us. We formed friendships with people from different corners of the world, engaged in meaningful conversations, and actively contributed to community projects. It was an unforgettable experience that broadened our perspectives and allowed us to make a positive impact in the world.
