When’s the doom?
By Nabhya Shekhar SC-C Monday, Apr 28, 2025
Let’s talk about doomsday — that charming concept where the world ends in fire, floods, or, apparently now, sea monsters.
All through history, doomsday has made several dramatic appearances. From the Norse Ragnarök, to the Biblical Book of Revelation, to that one time the Mayans allegedly scheduled humanity’s exit in 2012, people have always loved predicting our collective doom. There's something seemingly comforting about thinking the world’s mayhem has a deadline.
But wait — this time, it’s different. Social media has gone wild with claims of a shadowy figure rising (rather dramatically) from the ocean, the Leviathan — a massive, mythical sea creature often mentioned in ancient texts, including the Bible, where it's described as a monstrous beast of the deep, a symbol of divine power and chaos.
Surprisingly, some blurry sonar images and eerie whale sounds were all it took for conspiracy theorists to rise from the dead. According to them, the Leviathan is awake, the oceans are stirring, and the end is (conveniently) near.
To be fair, unnatural climate phenomena and rising sea levels are indeed very real. But the sudden jump from melting ice caps to prehistoric sea monsters feels like someone has been reading fantasy fiction a bit too much.
So no, the Leviathan probably isn’t coming for us. But if it does, let's hope it is before the new term starts.
