On 20 January 2026, Welham Girls’ School, in collaboration with the Doon Library and with the support of the Uttarakhand state government, hosted a special programme marking 250 years of Jane Austen: Her Legacy & Relevance Today.
From passionate readers and respected scholars to young writers and spirited quiz teams, the programme brought together generations bound by a shared love for Austen’s wit, insight, and enduring characters. Conceptualized by Shri N. Ravi Shanker and curated by Mrs. Radha Raturi and Mrs. Vibha Kapoor, the day was designed to spark curiosity, reflection, and joy in literature.
A creative writing competition showcased the imagination and depth of students from colleges across Dehradun, while a rich panel discussion explored Austen’s sharp social observations, her portrayal of women, and why her work continues to speak to modern audiences. The conversation was warm, engaging, and deeply resonant.
The distinguished panel featured Mr. Anil Raturi, former DGP of Uttarakhand and Chief Commissioner of Uttarakhand’s Right to Service Commission; Dr. Ruby Gupta, eminent academician and award-winning author; Dr. Chetna Pokhriyal from Doon University; Ms. Yauvanika Chopra, associated with the Valley of Words Literature and Arts Festival, Dehradun; and Dr. Shriya Goyal from DIT University. Their insights led to thoughtful reflection and engaging conversations with the audience.
The energy peaked with an exciting Jane Austen Quiz that tested literary knowledge, teamwork, and quick thinking across varied and innovative rounds. Welham Girls’ School secured the first place, followed by Graphic Era University and UPES, Dehradun.
The day concluded with an inspiring address by the Chief Guest, reminding everyone why Jane Austen’s voice still matters, centuries later.
