Welham Girls' School unfurled a beautiful programme on 15th August, 2021 to celebrate the glorious day that marks 75 years of India's Independence, beginning with the hoisting of the national flag by the Principal. Renditions of patriotic songs, an inspiring short play, a Kathak dance recital, speeches by all 5 House Captains on what freedom truly means, were telecast virtually for the staff and students. In her speech, Mrs Padmini Sambasivam, urged everyone to celebrate the several unsung heroes who have been equally instrumental in India's freedom. She shared the achievements of the country in these 75 years, a country that has continued to defy all odds and rise despite several challenges. She said one must understand the difference between independence and freedom and show solidarity towards fellow citizens while also recognising the power of the individual. Mrs Sambasivam said we must each believe we can make a difference to the country as an individual and ended her speech with a quote from Rabindranath Tagore that ends with "Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake." Jai Hind!
