Two ladies, one institution, two far-sighted and futuristic visions, one goal: Miss Grace Mary Linnell, the legendary Founder Principal of Welham Girls’ School, and her successor Miss Saroj Srivastava, under whose stewardship of eighteen years the school moved to greater heights. It is to remember and honour these stalwarts of education that every year the school hosts two of our most prestigious inter-school events dedicated to them- the Miss Saroj Srivastava Inter School English Debate and the Miss Linnell Memorial Inter School Hindi Debate. This year, the debates were held online on the 14th of October, 2020. Eleven top schools of the country participated in the debates. The Miss Saroj Srivastava Inter School English Debate was held in two rounds. The First round was in the extempore format with two speakers of each team speaking for and against the motion, and the third member of the team or the interlocutor asking questions to the speakers from other schools. The topic of the first round was, ‘The Notion of Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam or One World and One Family can never turn into reality’. The four best teams that qualified for the final rounds were Sanskaar Valley School, La Martiniere for Boys Kolkata, Vasant Valley School and Welham Girls’ School. The Second round was a modified version of the World School Debating format, in which the three speakers of each team were asked questions by the judges. The topic of the final round was, ‘‘Hate unites people more than love’. The overall winner of the debate was Welham Girls’ School, while Vasant Valley School was declared the Runners-Up team. The preliminary round of Sushri Linnell Smriti Antar Vidyalaya Hindi Vaad-Vivad Pratiyogita 2020 was held in Oxford format, the topic for which was given the previous day. The teams were divided into two pools A and B, and the meetings were held via Zoom. Two teams from each pool qualified for the final round which was held later in the day. The teams which qualified for the final round were The Sanskar Valley School and Welham Girl's School from pool A, and La Martiniere for Boys Kolkata and Welham Boy's School from pool B. From the proposition, Medha Ajitsaria of Welham Girl's School was declared the second-best speaker and Aditi Bhojnagarwala of Welham Girl's School was declared the best speaker. Overall, La Martiniere for Boys Kolkata received the runners up position, and Welham Girl's School as well as the Sanskar Valley School we declared the winners of the competition. Overall, the event was a great success, which overcame all the technological challenges despite the global pandemic and gave the students a fair opportunity to portray their talents.
